Roberto Auser

ausland_logoThis week I had a meeting with Roberto Auser (who is also in Kaval)… this as he will be doing the design and styling of Enfant Terrible records together with me from now on… first thing we are working on is the new design for Gooiland Elektro… so starting with Gooiland 20 (coming before summer) the Gooiland records will have a new look and feel…

Anyway he gave me the third release on his own Ausland Records… the final part of the trilogy by Roberto Auser… which is truly an impressive body of work…

The three 12″ EP’s take you by the hand and leads you through different places in the world of Ausland… it starts with a trip to a weird tropical place with “Future Exotica”… jungle sounds and synth sounds go hand in hand in a soundtrack for a trippy sci-fi film about a future past?

After this “Darkness Walks” mixes electronics with some jazzy influences to fit a film noir context for sure… the jazzy part is even more articulated in the new and last EP entitled “The New Dimension”…  about of Dale Cooper Quartet can be found here but also more weird psychedelic touches are there… feeling like you are transported back to a wild 60’s party…

Intended as a trilogy and ending with a record called “The New Dimension” one can only guess what will be next…

Here is one piece from the “Future Exotica” release…

Vinyl hype?

niedow_endSince some years there is a lot of talk about a vinyl hype… and indeed it seems some people are selling more vinyl records as before… but the funny thing is that all small independent labels I know are only selling less and less… this is a strange paradox…

After some investigation into this matter by reading articles on vinyl sales and talking to different people including other small independent labels and the younger generation of music buyers I have a vague idea on this… but mostly more and more questions… I plan to get into this matter more thoroughly in the near future…

For me and I am quite sure my fellow small independent label bosses a good record is all about making a product which should amaze, surprise and confuse people who buy it…

It is all about telling stories and in some cases as what I am doing with Vrystaete and some other people are doing likewise the process of creating a record is a story on its own… it adds layers of meaning and value to the end product…

To me that is the real meaning and spirit behind DIY (Do It Yourself) and DIT (Do It Together)… making the difference by creating a more personal product… a product people can connect to and maybe even identify with… creating a product with real value and meaning to people…

Some time ago my label was called ‘the musical equivalent of avant-garde fashion”, which is quite striking I think. In the past I myself made the comparison between my label and biological, seasonal and locally grown food and handmade products.

While I still think this comparison is quite a good one it has maybe even more meaning as before… if a small independent record label is like a small independent garden with a shop where they sell only locally grown and seasonal biological vegetables then the big(ger) labels are like the Aldi and Lidl stores of this world or for that matter like any big(ger) supermarket…

These labels put out and sell uniform and impersonal products with no narrative… these records are not made to connect with, identify with and there is no need to invest time and energy in them to get into the story behind… as there is non… I do not say that the music on these records are not telling a story… I am focusing here on the product itself and the process of creating the product…

The buyer of these records is supporting an industry here, the vinyl industry, not necessarily music culture… This as an industry it is… the vinyl records being sold today are mostly those with older music, not only but for a big part it is about re-issues… music which was sold once on cassette tapes and vinyl, later on again on compact disc, then in a digital format and now again on vinyl…

So what we have is for a big part old(er) music being sold again on an old format… then of course there is the question who is buying these records and why these and not other vinyl records?

Maybe the younger generation buys vinyl records to store them and show off with while playing the music in a digital format they get as download code with the vinyl? Or… is there too much being produced and is it harder and harder for a small independent label to show up in between this weekly pile of records? Does the younger generation have no time or interest to invest in, and in connect to, a product?

And what about the older generation? The ones who bought vinyl records before the so-called hype? Did they stop buying records? Maybe they switched to cassette tapes, this as an act of resistance? Like producing and buying vinyl records were once during the cd era for some people? One of the reasons pressing plants still exist today…

Blood, sweat and tears…

brunnen_stampedIt looks like a true artists workspace here at Enfant Terrible HQ as we are finalising the Brunnen and Diamantener Oberhof records for shipping… this means the inserts need to be stamped, the labels on the records need to stamped and the art prints need to be numbered…

This is a lot of work on itself as the ink needs to dry… so it takes time between stamping the A side label and the B side is possible… and even more as only a few record at once can be done due to the limited space on the table/at the ET HQ…

Same goes for the inserts… even though they take less room and can more easily be piled up to dry without things getting messy…

So… shipping starts soon but first the ink on the different parts on my fingers need to dry a bit…

diskettedeluxeThis sunday the 15th of February there is a new edition of Radio Resistencia live with Diskette Deluxe as special guest… he will be doing a live set and I myself dj Andy Dufter (from Lesbian Mouseclicks and Staatseinde) will be spinning some records… either fitting with the 8 bit inspired live set of Diskette Deluxe or not…

This mini event will take place at Kapitaal Utrecht and starts at 15.00 hour (CIT/CET) and lasts until 18.00 hour… the narrowcast will be on monday the 2nd of March on Intergalactic FM, IFM1, 21.00 hour…

Apoptygma Berzerk

Apop_logoOne of my favourite artists to play in the car is Apoptygma Berzerk… the Norwegian artist who was responsible for taking EBM to another stage during the 1990’s and early 2000’s…

Starting out with a sound heavily inspired by classic EBM Apoptygma Berzerk re-defined the genre for a new generation on the albums ‘Welcome To Earth” and “Harmonizer”… and he even bridged the gap between the dark scene and mainstream dance culture… mostly due to the remix of “Kathy’s Song” by Ferry Corsten…

After “Harmonizer” Apoptygma moved onwards to a more rock orientated sound and I must confess I never really got into that… but last year he released a 12″ with pure electronic music again and his older releases were re-issued on tape (the vinyl versions of the cd’s were re-issued a few years ago)… in interviews he talked about moving again more into electronic music for his next album as well… so I am curious about that…

In the meantime I am super proud to release an exclusive remix Apoptygma did for Tobias Bernstrup… this remix is featured on the upcoming “Romanticism” LP plus 12″ on Gooiland Elektro in collaboration with Tonight Records (Tobias Bernstrup’s own label)…

This remix is a dance track in the true meaning of the word… and a perfect mix of the decadent synth pop sound of Tobias Bernstrup and the “Harmonizer” modern day EBM / future pop period of Apoptygma Berzerk…

Diamantener Oberhof

DO_finishedThis weekend I printed the art prints for the Diamantener Oberhof release coming soon on Vrystaete. I could not have done this without the help of printing chief Ramon from Kapitaal as it turned out to be quite a difficult job…

The print coming with Diamantener Oberhof is a three color silk screen print… meaning it has three layers to print on top of each other… we printed first the red tongue, after that the yellow mask and then the black background which also gives shape to the face and the symbols beside the mask (see the photo)… it is nice to see the image taking shape with every step you take…

So the prints are finished now and I am more then satisfied with the end result… now it is time to wait for the vinyls to arrive so I can finish these with putting stamp prints on the labels… and then they are ready to leave the ET/Vrystaete HQ… I guess in about two to three weeks from now…

Neugeborene Nachtmusik

nn-logo_ISO_12X12Neugeborene Nachtmusik is the brainchild of Soldat Maurizio… he first joined the Enfant Terrible family with his project Milligram Retreat… after that project was destroyed by the other band member involved he continued under this new alias…

Residing in Berlin he continued to shape his music more and more into an unique style of this own… some results of this were displayed already on the various artists releases “Exploitation“, “I Am Enfant Terrible” and “Post-everything“…

Now the time is almost there that his debut album will be poured out over you… this album simple entitled “Neugeborene Nachtmusik” is something highly awaited by me… and I am happy it is in production now…

When it comes to the music it displays the talents of the musician very well… you get served six long tracks with effective minimalism and trance indulging sounds… influences from elektro, industrial, noise and (black) metal can be traced… the album is diverse but coherent in displaying the specific personal style of Neugeborene Nachtmusik…

This album is a pitch black experience… a shamanistic ritual and a dark trip which takes you by the hand and leads you beyond and back…

Here is a full track preview of one of the album tracks with a fan art video… enjoy!
